2010 Round 3 - Salters Lane

Salters Lane, Binbrook – East Coast Off Road Club. 9th May 2010

Motocross riders based in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire had plenty of events to choose from this weekend and well over a hundred riders elected to compete at the popular Salters Lane track with the East Coast ACU club. With just the right amount of rain over the week, the track was in race condition – good and sticky!

The Youth class kicked off the day’s racing, and was dominated across all three motos by the talented Bradley Ward, while Tom Ramsay rode impressively to three second places and Ashley Thompson took the third places. The apparently predictable results were, however, not an indication of a boring event – the racing was fast and spectacular.

The older riders were the next to the gate, with the 35-40 year olds racing with, but scoring separately from the “Vets”. The 35-40 year old’s class saw a clean sweep by Danny Blakeley. While the Vets saw a continuation of the competition between Richard (Tommo)Thompson and Richard Corner, but at this meeting Thompson was revenged for the last outing with three first places, while Iain Ramsay pushed Corner down to third.

In the small wheel 85 class Troy Willerton, notched up another 90 championship points and first place trophy with three wins on the day, while Hadley Stones and Matt Brame shared second and third places over the rapidly improving Ollie Ingall. In the fast paced big-wheel competition, the first five places were replicated in all three motos with Elliot Milburn taking top honours, followed by Tom Carlton and Toby Fincham.

The 39 strong novice class saw the reward for consistency go to Duncan Oliver who took first overall with three second place finishes. Recently self-demoted from the B class, Kevin Jude’s took the second place trophy while Tim Goy took the third podium place with two wins.

With an amalgamated race incorporating MX1 and MX2 racers of both Expert and A class, there was the opportunity for some spectacular and determined racing. The field was, however, dominated by Ryan Voase who walked away with the best of the prize money following three race wins. Danny Blakeley secured three second places.

The MX1 and MX2 B class riders were again amalgamated for the racing though scored separately and in the MX1 Damon Smith took the largest of the trophies with two first place finishes and James Archer’s consistent high finishes secured him just three points fewer and a clear second overall. The MX2 racers welcomed Adam Plumtree back to competitive riding and he was rewarded with a first overall for two very determined first place finishes. Nathan Clarke and Tom Ramsay finished on equal points, with the honours going to Clarke for the better finish in the third race.

With no major disruptions, only a brief shower and clever amalgamation of races, the day was finished in good time. This club is going from strength to strength with successful and well organised events at well prepared racing tracks, which are always greatly appreciated by the riders.

The next meeting will be on 23rd May at a new track for the club, Carter Hill. Details, registration and directions at www.eastcoastmx.co.uk.

2010 Round 2 - Benniworth Basin

Benniworth Basin – East Coast Off Road Club. 18th April 2010

Motocross riders, and particularly their accompanying supporters, across the Country must have had trouble believing it was only April this Sunday. Certainly at Benniworth Basin in the middle of the Lincolnshire countryside, the East Coast Off Road Club event basked in warm sunshine throughout the morning and early afternoon. Fears of dust were allayed on arrival – the track had been well watered in the previous evening and early morning and stood up well to a full day’s hard racing.

The Youth class kicked off the day’s racing, which saw a three-race tussle between Dean Hakes and Tom Doughty, with Hakes taking the honours on the day with two wins, while the third podium place went to Tom Ramsay.

A class for the older rider was introduced to the Club Championship this season, with the 35-40 year olds racing with, but scoring separately from the “Vets”. The 35-40 year old’s class was dominated by Darren Reed, with three first place finishes. While the Vets saw some great racing beween Richard Corner and Richard Thompson, with Corner taking two of the three first places of the day.

The younger riders were also well represented with small and big wheel 85s racing hard. The small wheel class was won by Troy Willerton, with three wins on the day, while Lewis Wigger and Matt Brame shared second and third places. In the Big-wheel competition, Ryan Hooks won two of the three races to take first overall

As is the case at many meetings, the Novice class attracted the most entrants with a full gate. Mark Collins was rewarded with the most consistently well placed finishes with a first overall, while Tim Goy took the second place trophy having completed just two races but in third and then first places respectively.

The best of the MX1 and MX2 riders were the next to race, with Expert and A class riders keeping the spectators attention firmly on the battles on the track. In the MX1 class Sebastian Osborne retained the overall honours having taken two race wins, but being pushed to second place by Jamie Smith in the third. A crash at the start of the third thwarted Anthony Reville’s complete dominance of the MX2 race allowing “A” class rider Josh Fytche to take the first place trophy on the day.

The final races were the B Class riders, with the MX1 trophy going to Sam Chapman who secured three race wins. The MX2 class saw Ben Rollinson also take three first places, though the third went to the final lap when he overtook Sam Bradley who had led the majority of the race.

With no major disruptions, other than a 20 minute break after the first moto for distribution of the 2009 Championship trophies, this was yet another highly successful and well organised meeting from the East Coast Off Road Club.

The next meeting will be on 9th May at Salters’ Lane track near Louth. Details, registration and directions at www.eastcoastmx.co.uk.
